Introduction to Hanoi

Hanoi - the capital of Vietnam - is one of the world's most beautiful and fascinating cities. It is situated on the banks of the Red River about 100 kilometres from the sea. There is evidence of humans having lived in the area that date back as far as the 3rd century B.C. It first became the capital in 1010 and remained so until 1802, when Hue was made the capital under the Nguyen Dynasty. Although the French took over the city in 1888, the city adapted and continued to prosper. When the French left in 1954, Hanoi was once again declared the capital.

Since then, Hanoi has changed from being a mainly commercial city into becoming a centre for industry and agriculture. Industries include chemicals, motors and textiles while the surrounding areas produce crops of rice, cereals and vegetables. Many of the traditional handicrafts are still practiced in Hanoi including silver carving, bronze molding, embroidery and lacquer work.
A significant and substantial portion of Hanoi was built during the occupation of France and the city has a noticeably French feel to it; with wide boulevards and French-inspired architecture. While the city has more of a slow pace and is not quite as modernized as Ho Chi Minh City - formerly Saigon - the city has some extremely beautiful streets and neighborhoods. In many ways, Hanoi is more physically attractive; it has a gracious, placid quality to it with lots of greenery, lakes and wide open spaces.

A lot of the monuments and palaces in Hanoi have been damaged by war down though the years - the war with America was particularly destructive - but there are still many historical and scenic places of interest to be seen today including the Old Quarter with over 600 pagodas, the One Pillar Pagoda, the Temple of Literature and the Tay Phuong Pagoda. Other places of interest include the University of Hanoi, the Revolutionary Museum, the Army Museum, and the National Museum.
