Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum

Ho Chi Minh's importance among the Vietnamese is inestimable, and his mausoleum and the surrounding area therefore is imbued with enormous significance. Worshipped as an unflinchingly patriotic revolutionary, he is adored for his having great empathy with the people and has reached almost mythical status in the minds of most Vietnamese. Schools around the country concentrate on the positive side of his career and prefer to ignore any of his failed economic policies or other errors of management. Thousands of Vietnamese, many of them children on field trips, still come to pay their respects to Uncle Ho. On days such as Vietnam National Day and Ho Chi Minh's birthday, loyal party members and other dignitaries come to pay their respects.

Ho would never have approved of the mausoleum, as he had expressed a desire to be cremated. But his memory has been preserved like that of most other Communist leaders such as Lenin, Stalin, and Mao. His embalmed body, lying in a bullet proof glass case, is the only thing inside the building.

When visiting the mausoleum, it is important to adhere to the strict protocol that's in place; you should sign in at the office south of the mausoleum and leave your possessions a checkpoint closer to the tomb itself. You can't bring in any cameras, hats or bags of any description.
